Last night I accompanied Stephen and his press-agent Phoebe to the Elle Style Awards. It was at the Savoy Hotel so a suitably flash affair…and not something I can say I’m that used to.
First up, there was the journey to the red carpet which seemed to take forever and then culminated in 5 seconds of the paparazzi screaming at Stephen while I virtually crawled into the hotel to stay out of shot. We were then pushed through several ante-rooms where again the indoor paps bawled at us like army sergeants, and then the important people lined up to fire off 3 minute interviews on their favorite dresses and which colours are hot right now.
If you’re not one of these important people, then you have to stick to their side to remain untouchable or risk the disdain and elbows of the organisers who, to be fair, are just doing their best to run a celebrity conveyor belt. You can kind of see the look of bewilderment in my eyes at this point. A sort of WTF am I doing here and how do I get out.
At this stage I should say that everyone I spoke to said this was one of the of easiest and most stress-free events of the year so I’m not complaining but it does give one a bit of insight into what people get put through on the red carpet. Sure they get a free dinner, but they get beaten up first.
Our table was pretty sweet: more music than fashion really. The three of us, plus Emeli and her crew, Dizzee and his. A very fine dinner followed by an award ceremony hosted by Alexa Chung. Not too long at least and some good laughs especially from Dizzee and then Cuba Gooding Junior who seemed to have been drinking ever since the BAFTAs and proceeded to ask the audience ‘What the fuck you laughing at?!?’. I’d say everyone in that room knew at that point that wherever CBJr was partying later, that was the place to be.
After all this excitement there was an after party downstairs, with DJs, more beautiful people and a live set from Emeli and Stephen. Backstage:
New chain alert:
I’ve got to say, this wasn’t the usual venue or crowd of punters, maybe they were a bit older and more reserved than the Barrowlands regulars but everyone was up for it….
Off-stage a couple of drinks and then off to be photographed again, but this time, a lot more relaxed than the bunfight earlier.
Then some more drinks and the introductions were made, X met Y and it got dark and I wasn’t meant to have a camera there in the first place so it seemed easier to just give in to the chilli martinis and the beautiful surroundings of one of London’s most famous hotels.
To be fair, I did start the night like a rabbit dumbstruck by headlights, but after a while it was a lot of fun; I’m not one to get star-struck but when Christina Hendricks squeezes that frame past you and then Rufus Sewell high-fives you for having a cool name, it’s not a shit night out. So thank you Elle for a great evening.
Rufus.
